Thank you to whoever cleaned my 3rd floor kitchen!!!
The nasty dish-tumor on the counter had been metastasizing for the last couple of months.
For those of you who use the upstairs kitchen, could you maybe keep it clean for a few days? Also, it should not be Melissa's job as my wonderful housekeeper to have to deal with a pile of dishes when she cleans the kitchen.
As for my mysterious dish savior, feel free to tackle the downstairs kitchen too ;). And to everyone else: CLEAN YOUR DISHES WHEN YOU DIRTY THEM. Dorm kitchens don't have to be nasty, if you're not lazy.Current Mood: accomplished

Honestly, how hard is it for you college students to cook popcorn in a microwave?
You put it in, you press a button, and you stay at the microwave and watch it cook. You wait until the popping settles down, and then stop it manually. No burnage. No smell. No smoke. No fire alarm. Everyone's happy.
There are many reasons why I hate fire alarms. First of all, they give me a headache. How'd you like it if lights and buzzers literally went off inside your head? Second of all, all of my fire doors close. I don't have the opportunity to exercise them very often, so they get kind of stiff.
On top of that, Public Safety takes way to long to disarm my systems.
To whoever was responsible for tonight's little incident, if you're one of my residents, be aware that I'm watching you. Just wait; next thing you know, you'll turn around and find yourself locked out of your room.
My revenge shall be swift and terrible!!!Current Mood: annoyed

I got my windows cleaned today. Now I'm all pretty and shiny! Well... sorta. They're getting there.
One retaining wall edge of my front patio has been installed, and a triangular section of the aforementioned paving stones has been added as well. A lot of the construction mess has been cleaned out of the downstairs lounge.
Two large machines, a backhoe and another earthmover, were at work out front today, grading my front courtyard.
I've noticed that the construction workers stand around. A lot. I realize that they're entitled to regular breaks from their difficult work on me, but I do wonder when it starts to get excessive. Maybe this is part of the reason why I was barely finished in time?
My fancy power-assist doors aren't working very well. They seem to turn off from time to time, getting stuck open in what I imagine is some sort of safe mode. Also, the handle on the inner door leading into the first floor hallway from the main lounge's temporary anteroom regularly sticks in the open position.
I've heard a lot of people complaining about the lack of hot water. I'll have to ask facilities to double-check that my water heaters are doing their job. At least my water pressure is good.
Once all of these kinks are ironed out, I think my residents will be even happier. Go me!Current Mood: thirsty

Yay! My halls are finally filled with students go about their first days of classes! :)
I think pretty much everyone is moved in at this point... my elevator has certainly seen a lot of use the last couple of days. Most of the boxes have been cleared out of the hallways, at any rate, so I have to assume that most people are done moving.
I think I have a pretty good population for my first year; it seems that there are a lot of cool people who decided to take the risk and live in me for the first time. I guess they're a sort of guinea pig.
I think a lot of people are getting loft double envy already; I've seen many other students standing agape at the size of those rooms while they were touring.
As for my construction status, there is clearly still some work to be done. The downstairs lounge/public area is the staging ground for a lot of the construction, and it's still missing a finished floor or ceiling. The balcony off of the upstairs lounge seems a little bit unsafe; I think my railings need work. My landscaping at the moment consists of mud, mud, and more mud, but groundskeeping tells me that my roof garden is starting to come in nicely.
On that note, stay off my roof! It isn't safe, and I don't want my plants getting trampled! :P
The work I noticed today was a trench being doug near my sibling Mertz. Also, about 100 square feet of paving stones were laid in a small corner in front of my main entrance.
Here's to an awesome year!Current Mood: full

I've heard from Bill McGuire himself that I'll be done in time for the semester to start! Yessss!!!
For those of you who don't know Bill, he's the totally awesome head of facilities. He basically keeps the college together with his bare hands.
So yeah, yay! Go me! I knew I'd be ready for you!Current Mood: ecstatic

» Foggy
The heavy rain this afternoon has blanketed campus in a thick fog. I can barely see Parrish from my place down the hill.
The construction is coming along. Although there is still an open field of muck in front of me, they're nearly finished connecting all of my plumbing.
Another interesting observation: the last worker to leave every day locks up the construction trailer, and then uses the same porta-potty. I guess everyone needs a routine. ;)
It gets lonely at night. I can't want until people move in, have parties, etc.

» Rain
Rainy days always make me feel sort of grey. Yes, I realize that I'll always be gray, but that's not the point. When it's raining really hard, like last week, no one comes to work on me. I'm so close to being finished...
At least all of my windows are done, even the huge window for the room that faces Mertz. My roof is done too - about the only things that are still open to the air are my balcony outside of the third floor lounge, and the entrances on the first floor for the workers.
There's a huge pit out front, well, more of a ditch, really. I think they're getting ready to hook my plumbing up to the rest of the campus network. Soon I'll be getting chilled water from the new cooling plant behind NuPont!
Does anyone know if I'll actually be allowed to turn on the climate control systems for my residents? I know that they're being installed, but I wouldn't be surprised if someone in the administration told me to keep them off out of fairness, or perhaps power conservation.

» Hi!
This is my first post in my brand new LiveJournal! If you don't know who I am, I'm the new dormitory at Swarthmore College, located between Mertz Hall and the SEPTA regional rail station. Most people just call me "new dorm", since I don't really have a name yet.
By the way, if you have lots and lots of money, and you don't know what to do with it ::cough:: Eugene Lang! ::cough::, just pay for my construction and you can get me named after you, or your favorite person! Come to think of it, that might also be you... but that's another issue entirely.
At any rate, I plan to use this journal to keep track of my last month (hopefully) of construction. After that... who knows! Maybe I'll just keep you all (yes, I'm aware that there aren't any of you out there yet) updated on what's going on in my life, or rather, in me ;).
I promise I'll post some pictures of myself soon!
